“The national team is over for me,” said Lionel Messi to an Argentine Network after Chile wins the Copa America Final.

After a scoreless match with added extra time, Chile vs Argentina went into penalties. Chile won in PKs 4-2 with Messi and Lucas Biglia failing to score for Argentina.

After the match, Argentina’s captain was seen crying and comforted by many of his teammates. He later told media, “I thought about it in the locker room, I’m done with the national team.” Although his teammate Sergio Romero believes otherwise, “I don’t think he’s thought about it properly … I don’t imagine a national team without Messi.”

Messi helped take Argentina to the World Cup Final in 2014 vs Germany, Copa America Final vs Brazil in 2007, Copa America Final vs Chile in 2015, and Copa America Final vs Chile in 2016. Yet with four finals in the last 10 years, Argentina could not win a major title, and it has frustrated Messi, “I’ve done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion.”

Despite having great talent on the team, Argentina has not won the Copa America since 1993, and the last World Cup they won was in 1986.

At 29 years old, Messi is still young enough to go to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. With his frustration high from Sunday’s loss, there are speculations that he may feel differently when the time arrives.
